Has your tongue untied itself yet? Sometimes I feel I may be the only one struggling to post tweets on Twitter within only 140 characters. Everyone else seems to be doing it fine. Maybe I include too much detail but it made me think that maybe I could be doing more with my tweets to get more in and make them more successful, enjoyable, useful or just get more in. So I did some digging…
Now, if anyone claims they’ve come up with the ‘perfect tweet’ I’m sure it would largely dependson your audience, niche or industry so it woudn’t apply to everyone.
To coincide with your efforts in getting better Twitter followers here are some tips I’ve picked up on my travels to help you write better Twitter tweets.
Avoid Abbreviations
If you want to appear as being professional and approachable it’s best not to write like you’re a 13 year old’s messenger conversation. Dat aint gonna mek ppl want 2 read ur twtr msgs.
Not only does it make it difficult to read it also takes longer to read if you’re not used to the shortened lingo and can be frustrating for anyone who is potentially interested in what you have to say. It can easily alienate a lot of your target audience… unless you really are going for the young teenager speed-text generation.
Be Concise But Detailed
Learn to be concise with what you say but include enough information so that it can’t be misconstrued or misinterpreted and come back to bite you.
Take Your Time
The tweet field is large and inviting and it is too easy just to write your post without too much through. Try sitting on your tweet for a moment and thinking it through, much like you would an important email. Make sure you don’t rush this as it can cause misunderstandings and negative results. Make sure your message gets across clearly. Thoughtful tweets are more likely to be appreciated. If you’re including a link or a call to action it’s more like to be clicked or acted upon.
Think About Headlines
If you’re linking to an article or piece of work online think about the text you’re using to get people interested in your link. Since there are so many links now being posted on Twitter it can sometimes take a lot more work to get people to click them. Make sure you include an accurate description of what they will be seeing once they click the link. Picking the right headline for this is something that does need some thought.
