As I’m sure you are aware, MySpace is a great networking resource for sharing and promoting music. It’s great for networking, but has some great features you should be taking advantage of if you aren’t already.
First of all, you need to sign up for a musician’s account, rather than a typical user account. This will allow to access to a music player and will gear your profile around music and allow you to make the most of promoting it.
Once you’ve signed up you’ll be asked fill in the content including your biography and who you sound like. Make sure this information is unique. If you simply copy and paste the details from your website it’s likely to go ignored by some of the search engines and you won’t be making the most of your profile. You need to put some time into your biography to gear it around who you are, what you play and where you are.
Make sure your biography is descriptive of your style and sells you well. Make it engaging and interesting without too much ‘fluff’. Include a couple of images or banners to advertise your website if you need to but don’t go over the top with any additional features. Keep things clean, easy to read and simple – you don’t want to turn people away that don’t want to – or can’t – wait for everything to load.
Instead of using your name for the title of the profile, try using something descriptive. Something describing what you do, although ‘rock band’ may not cut it. Try to make things more descriptive than that. ‘Female Pop Rock Band Leicester’ would be much more descriptive and you’re likely to attract people looking for that as opposed to anyone looking for a rock band in general… which may not be ‘strictly’ what you are.
Generally speaking, people who are looking for something and know what they like or what they are after often search for much more niche terms. Anyone look for ‘rock bands’ are likely to not know what they are looking for or are just looking.
So, using the above notion, you’ll be opening yourself up to those not only looking for ‘rock band’, but also ‘rock band Leicester’, ‘pop rock band Leicester’, ‘female rock band’, and numerous other variations, widening your scope and also getting those niche visitors.
Your main photo is important. This is the one that people will see in the search results within MySpace and it becomes the header of your profile. As with the text, make it engaging but also memorable and descriptive of what you are about.
If you’re concerned that your band name, or brand, isn’t going to be put across if you change your profile name away from your band name, you could use the image to put this across again.
Include a few images in your profile to either break up the text or provide some idea of your visual style. Let people see what you look like and know who you are. It may sound a little cliché but a picture can tell a thousand words. At the very least visitors will be able to put a face to the sound and gives them more to remember once they’ve clicked away from your profile.
Quick Tip: You can also list upcoming gigs for your fans to follow. The closer your gig comes the higher it gets listed within the list of all gigs on the site and can get you some last minute exposure. The more gigs you post the better your exposure is likely to be.
So, to conclude, make your profile easy to read, navigate and include only the necessary information while keeping it interesting. Don’t make people wait. Give the reader what they expect to see and, essentially, what they want. See what some of the top bands are doing with their profiles and work out what makes their pages so popular.
I hope this has given you some fuel to better your profile and increase its visibility. If you have anything further to add feel free to post your ideas in the comments section.
