Three years after the launch of Twitter in 2006 the ideas used and approaches taken to promote and market companies, products and brands has almost become an art in itself – and with great reward. Great marketers of the ‘Twittersphere’ continue to promote products in new, exciting and surprising ways on a daily basis.
This is all well and good for established marketers, but can the typical band, DJ, musician or even a promoter use Twitter to promote their work and music?
What is Twitter?
Tweets are publicly broadcast out to the world. Given its global reach the nature of Twitter content generally tends to be relatively personal or based around a particular interest/niche. The live and personal nature of the content can give people sense of closeness to the poster that has not been previously available on such a large scale and potentially focused audience, allowing you to build a relationship with your followers.
How can it be used?
Twitter can be used to gain the attention of the mass public – particularly those interested in what you have to offer. Twitter utilises a similar feature to what MySpace or Facebook thrives on – the ability to add friends. Well, in this case, follow people.
With Twitter you can choose to follow anyone you like, famous or not, and be updated on anything they are doing – or whatever they post. People can also choose to follow you. If your posts are interesting, useful or if they relate to what they are interested in then you are likely to get a good following of people that you can promote yourself or your services to.
What Do I Do?
Getting a large following isn’t the easiest of jobs to do and requires a lot of hard work. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t put in the work and resort to buying Twitter followers – that’s just not a good idea if you’re looking to promote your work successfully to people that matter.
Instead, you need to work at posting interesting comments, relate them to your services occasionally to attract relevant followers, and generally be helpful, useful and interact. That should get you off to a good start.
I’ll hopefully go into more details about how you can use Twitter for a better effect shortly. Until then, go and get yourself an account set up and see where you get. You might be surprised.
