Creating a Better Musician Profile with MySpace

Following on from my previous post detailing some of the worst things you can do with your MySpace profile if you are a band, musician, DJ, MC or producer, here are a few things you should be doing with your profile if you are to get a better response when it comes to promoting it.

First of all you need to ensure the content written for the MySpace profile you want to promote is unique – this is a big factor in having the search engines take notice of your profile and increases the chance of them sending people there.

You need to ensure it contains your main service or what you offer within the text itself. For example, if you are a Trance DJ and you don’t mention that within the text, how are your visitors meant to know what you do? Let alone the search engines. Don’t overdo it though – keep your text as natural as possible.

Keep the information to-the-point and interesting. No one likes to read waffle on the internet. In fact, people don’t read all that much. They tend to skim-read. Make sure you get your point across in fewer words.

Highlight the key points you want to get across. Use bold and italics and try to put your message across using only emboldened or italicised text. That way, busy people can immediately know whether you offer what they are looking for and can either spend more time on your profile or go elsewhere, wasting as little of anyone’s time as possible.

Use complimentary images. Include images that complement what you do, such as gig photos, studio shoots or photos that show off your style in some way. Keep them descriptive, as a picture can speak a thousand (or so) words.

Include links to other social media sites, Twitter in particular. This way people can find out up-to-date news on your band or music easily and when they are on the move.

Update the MySpace blog regularly with news and include links to either your website or your MySpace profile page or other posts. This helps the users to interact with what you have to say and are likely to visit your profile again, add you as a friend or comment on your blog post or profile.

So there you have it – just a few things you can do with your MySpace profile to help promote your services whether you are a musician, DJ, band, vocalist… and so on.

Is there anything I’ve missed out or that anyone can add to my list? Please comment below.

Please note: I don't claim to have all the answers and here on my blog I can only give you ideas and suggestions from my own knowledge and experience within my own niche. Since I know very little about what you do exactly and can only cover a number of angles in each post, if you you can add anything please do so for the benefit of our reader in a comment - I'd be most grateful.

Music Marketing UK Blog Owner
Welcome to my Music Marketing blog. I have been actively involved with online promotion for many years now, both professionally and in my spare time, and being an active musician for the best part of 9 years I felt I needed to share my knowledge and experience with those that would be most appreciative and could put it to good use.

My aim here is to combine the two areas into manageable chunks and present tips, ideas and inspiration for anyone wanting to promote their music online and offline and generally get one foot above the rest, set themselves apart from the average and achieve what they want to achieve musically. I'm hoping the information I post here can help you do just that.
